=====! demo !==================================================================

        Gasoline by Recreation (Party-version)
        Found at www.scene.org
        1st place at the Assembly'99 non-accelerated democompo

        System requirements:
        2.4 MB HD, a VESA2 videocard and a MIDAS-compatible soundcard.
        No requirements in the info-file...

        The demo:
Gasoline is mainly a 3D-demo, not an unusual thing for an
assembly-winner. But the accent is not on 3D-worlds, but rather on
3D-effects: there are for example ghost-metaballs, of which you can
only see an nimbus, hovering through a morphing tunnel with trails
of light. Another good scene is that with the 4 pillars with a
fire-ball on top, which consist of hundred small red lights on the
outside of the globe, with lightning on the inside. One less good
part is the realtime-raytracing part, that is REALLY slow. It is
sharp (no blur), but that only makes it look like normal 3D. I think
raytracing should only be used for showing things that are hard to
do in the normal way: shadows, reflections, many intersecting objects
and the like. A few 2D-effects are used as intro or outro for the
3D-parts: TV-snow, horizontal blur and other basic effects.
The graphics are very good: about four hand-pixeled faces (males
and females) with a typical strange hair-style, and the end-pic of a
girl under water, blowing air-bubbles. Los did a very good job on
        this.

        The music:
There is one tune, and it's about 90% percussion. No techno, but
rather like a rock-band without guitars. There are almost no melodic
instruments, except for a few slower parts in the demo where the
music follows. Personally, I don't really like this style of music.
Syncing is OK, as far as a 3D-demo can be synced: sudden breakdowns
at the end of a part, static noise when showing TV-snow and such.

        Worth the download?
Gasoline is a good demo, with good effects and superb graphics,
but somehow, I was expecting more of Assembly's 1st place. It has no
connections between the different parts, and I've no idea what
"Gasoline" has to do with the content of the demo. A theme or
feeling may make a demo harder to create, but it helps a lot to make
a demo enjoyable! Look f.e. at Matriisi, the winning 4K at Asm99,
that is one of the ugliest intros I've ever seen, but it has a theme
and humor :) Unrecognizable things, like the quickly-changing white
greetings with the white lights in the background, always seems
design-errors to me, but they may be intentional. Specially the
greetings, as the scene has a tradition of making these unreadable.
Of course, these remarks will not stop you from downloading Gasoline
and judge for yourself, I hope. I always try to review the latest
demos, but I wonder if there is a single person that hasn't checked
the top 3 of Assembly, a week after the event :)

        Cry for help!
I still don't have a 3D-card, so the accelerated demos will not be
reviewed unless someone else does the job... Rumor has it that PS is
on the run for the FBI (either for drug-abuse or for some kind of
intelligent super-script, I'm not sure) and is hiding by Adok/Hugi,
so if you want to help, read this issue carefully to see where to
        send your articles.
                                                                        Seven

[editor: actually im at antiq right now seven, your weird! :)]

=====! intro !=================================================================

        Unnamed haujobb intro
        Winner of ltp3 :P (probably)

Shad2 on intro :) Anything more need to be said, its a 3d engine
with nytrik's textures and logos, music by muffler, another good
music joint from that cool guy muffler.
And unlike shad the intro actually also has 2d effects and fucking
good ones i might add coded by droid! Good particle system, weird
metaballs, good 3d engine, good textures, good logos, big fonts,
good music on a 64k intro. Fuck shad i'll say! Haujobb intro world
        domination!
                                                                           ps

'Lia' by Muffler for Tokyo Dawn Records

Muffler has been lately very known by his hardstepping tracks
released all around the net in various groups. As TDR seems to
allways catch a somewhat different flow, this muffler track is
a combination of hardstep and darkish triphop, and all that in
a really depressive atmosphere. Starting out with the lovely
guitar and a piano drawing the harsh beat to the front which
are set off in a real tempest with the funky vocal. after some
time the beats start to flow in the more-less standard d'n'b
manner and then the breaks kick in again and changing with the
downbeat parts constantly surprising with its randomness.
Altho i'm somewhat a fan of muffler's music this review is
not at all biased and i'd really recommend the track, its
worth the download and it isn't a 'yet-another-d'n'b-track'

'Linking Worlds' by Looza (MP3) released on Tokyo Dawn Records

10 megs? Is he insane? Well, i thought so too. Unknown artist
big download - its really a big turnoff. But Looza has loads
of talent and he shows it all in this jazzy freestyled d'n'b,
drawing a bit on Squarepusher and Peshay. The track actually
        consists of three parts:
Part one introduces the main jazz theme in a downbeat manner,
that will be making its way through the entire track. Pay
special attention to the saxophone - its really amazing.
Part two kicks into the Squarepusher style with frantic
beating and improvisations flying all over the place. Truly
        a remarkable devlopment.
Part three still keeps some of the spirit of part two but
the breaks flow more evenly and this part is accenting the
        instruments more then the breaks.
If you're into jazz and innovative d'n'b this is the track
for you. I myself am waiting for more Looza stuff somewhere
        on the net!

'Other Contact' by Elysis released for NOiSE

Dark electro coming up. Elysis seems so have made the
sample making skill to another level cause he's really dedicated
to that part, playing with different sources and tweaking them
to perfection. He gave a full list of the origin and the way he
made them. Besides the really interresting usage of Schneider
this track is also very carefully thought ought with excellent
structure. Sounding as the Dopplereffekt in its style its a rarely
heard style in the scene. Sets the whole atmosphere perfectly
and draws you into his electroid universe giving you a tour of
the local robotized inhabitants. Never declining into boring
and monotone but yet so simple and programmed at the first hear
as you listen to it more and more you discover the underlayering
of tiny sounds that fill the track and make it a complete entity!

                                                      - argus live from antiq
