^Julia Ward Howe, travelling with a minister and several friends,
 sings songs with the Union soldiers. She adds the line "John Brown's
 body lies a-moldering in the ground; His soul is marching on."
^A soldier replies "Mrs. Howe, why do you not write some good words
 for that stirring tune?"
^The next morning's twilight brought the rest of the poem to Mrs. Howe.
 In February 1862 the Atlantic Monthly publishes "The Battle Hymn of
 the Republic".

^^ Monday, July 13th, 1863
^Citizens, especially angry over provisions in the draft bill
 allowing substitution and the purchase of exemption, mob the
 draft headquarters. Buildings are set afire, establishments
 looted. The riot lasts several days before order is restored.
 It is estimated that over 1,000 people are killed or wounded.
