[2.0] Wing Commander IV for Windows 95

[2.1] Differences from the DOS Version

+ Utilizes Microsoft DirectX library!

+ Play the game full-screen or in a window!

+ Throttle and rudder pedal support!

+ With the correct setup, the frame rate will be faster on high-end
machines compared to the DOS version!

+ Impressive scaling technology used to "simulate" SVGA with low-res
    graphics!

+ 16-bit sound in spaceflight!

+ Command-line parameters for added customization

[2.2] Command-line Parameters

-i Run install program (from Wing IV DOS)

-d Force hardware double buffering off -- essentially disables the
speed gain of DirectDraw, and draws the screen similar to the
DOS version. This is on by default.

-h Use the MUSICx.TRE from the CD -- This file was copied
to the hard drive to increase frame rate of the DOS version.
Explosions, comms, and music all spooling from the CD cause the
        frame rate to decrease dramatically.

-l# With native CDs, the game will use the native language. If the
switch is used, the subtitles will appear in the desired
        language.

        0 English
        1 German
        2 French

For example, -l2 will select French subtitles.

-no_interlace Do not draw the "black lines" between each line of the
                movies.

-no_sound Disable DirectSound

-true_color Use 24-bit color for the movies

-dead_zone=#	Increase or decrease the dead zone for greater
joystick precision. By default, the dead zone is
		1. Using a value of 0 will turn the dead zone
off, and using a value of 3 will make the game
respond similar to the DOS version.

For example, -dead_zone=0 will turn off the dead zone.

To use command line parameters, you will need to change your shortcut
on the desktop before running the game.

1 Right-click on the Wing Commander IV icon
2 Click Properties
3 Click Shortcut
4 Depending on where you installed the game, the Target line
should read something similar to "c:\wc4\wc4w.exe"
5 Add parameters (with a space between them) on the Target line
    after "c:\wc4\wc4w.exe".

    For example, "c:\wc4\wc4w.exe -dead_zone=0 -no_interlace"

[2.3] Features

[2.3.1] Window vs. Full-screen mode

If you are running a desktop resolution of 800x600 or higher, you have
the option of running the game in a window. Use [ALT][ENTER] to switch
between Windowed and Full-screen mode. When running in a window, if
your desktop is running in 256 colors and the game is running in 16-bit
color, you may experience odd colors. Simply switch your desktop
resolution to 16-bit color. Consult your Windows 95 documentation for
information on how to switch your desktop resolution.

[2.3.2] Throttle and Rudder Support

When set up in the Joystick Properties, the throttle and rudder pedals
can be used in Wing Commander IV for Windows 95. The throttle will
affect your set speed, and the rudder pedals will roll your ship.

Additionally, when selecting the Control Type, you can choose from
Keyboard, Mouse, and whatever joystick you have selected in the Windows
95 Control Panel.

[2.3.3] Low-Resolution Mode

The low-resolution mode (was VGA) of Wing Commander IV renders the game
to a 320x240 window and uses DirectDraw to scale the game to 640x480
before drawing the HUD. Frame-rate switch is on by default, which means
that in low frame rate situations, the game will automatically switch to
low-res. In combat, this is not noticeable, and will help to improve
gameplay speed.

[ALT][1-4] will not change the resolution from VGA to SVGA. They are now
used as follows :

[ALT][1] Low-resolution without page-flipping
[ALT][2] Low-resolution with DirectDraw page-flipping
[ALT][3] High-resolution without page-flipping
[ALT][4] High-resolution with DirectDraw page-flipping

The options screen still uses the term VGA, but in Wing Commander IV for
Windows 95, it is referring to the low-resolution mode.

[3.0] DirectX II

[3.1] What is DirectX?

DirectX is a set of 32 bit software drivers for your computer's
peripherals such as your sound card or video card. These drivers are
used to display video and play sounds. Without DirectX, the game will
not function, and without using the latest DirectX drivers, game
performance will be affected.

DirectX is a Microsoft product. It is important to note that unsupported
or outdated DirectX drivers may cause your computer to lockup or crash.
You will need to contact Microsoft for support of DirectX.

[3.2] How do I determine if DirectX is installed?

1 Double-click My Computer.
2 Right-click on the CD-ROM disc icon.
3 Click Explore.
4 Double-click DirectX.
5 Double-click DXSETUP.EXE.

All components of DirectX should be certified. If this is not the case,
you will need to contact your video or sound card manufacturer for the
latest DirectX drivers.

[3.3] How do I make sure I have the most recent version?

1 Double-click My Computer.
2 Right-click on the CD-ROM disc icon.
3 Click Explore.
4 Double-click DirectX.
5 Double-click DXSETUP.EXE.

Under the version column, DirectDraw and DirectSound should be at least
version 4.03.00.1096. You will need to contact your video or sound card
manufacturer to make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers.

[3.4] How do I remove DirectX?

To remove DirectX :

1 Double-click My Computer.
2 Right-click on the CD-ROM disc icon.
3 Click Explore.
4 Double-click DirectX.
5 Double-click DXSETUP.EXE.
6 Select 'Restore Windows95 drivers'. You will need your copy of
    Windows 95 ready.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

[4.0] Known Problems

[4.1] Input Devices

[4.1.1] Using Multiple Keys at the Same Time

There is a keyboard problem where you cannot use more than a few keys
pressed at the same time. This makes keyboard flight difficult. There
is currently nothing that can be done about this.

[4.1.2] Unintentional Task-Switching

Another problem that exists is afterburning [TAB] and using the wingman
hotkeys [ALT][key]. This will often task-switch you out of the
application due to the use of [ALT][TAB] in Windows. You can simply
task-switch back and continue.

[4.1.3] Joystick Calibration

Using [ALT][C] or clicking on Calibrate in the Control Parameters or
Spaceflight Options Menu will not invoke joystick calibration. Instead,
these will "re-center" the joystick.

The joystick should be calibrated while the game is running. Section
5.1 details how to calibrate the joystick.

[4.2] Display

Certain S3/ATI cards will show a random "HUD flash" that occurs with
some video cards. When this "flash" occurs, for one frame, it appears
that the HUD is not being drawn correctly. There is currently nothing
that can be done about this.

[4.3] Audio

The Pro Audio Studio 16 experienced sound problems during testing. We
were not able to resolve the problem with the latest DirectX drivers.

[4.4] Screen Saver

Wing Commander IV does not disable your screen saver. It is possible
that your screen saver may kick in during long movies. It is a good
idea to turn off your screen saver before playing Wing Commander IV.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

[5.0] Troubleshooting

[5.1] Joystick Drifting

If your joystick is not working correctly, it may not be set up
correctly in the Control Panel. For the best results, the joystick
should be set up while the game is running.

1 Start Wing Commander IV for Windows 95.
2 When in gameflow or spaceflight, task-switch to the desktop with
    [ALT][TAB].
3 Right-click My Computer.
4 Double-click Control Panel.
5 Double-click Joystick, which will bring up the Joystick Properties.
6 Make sure your Joystick configuration is correct.
7 If you have trim knobs, center them.
8 Click Calibrate. Follow the instructions to calibrate your
    joystick.
9 Task switch back to Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 ([ALT][TAB]).
Whenever the joystick starts to drift, press [ALT][C] in the game
    to re-center the joystick.

[5.2] Gameplay or Movie Pausing

Assuming you meet the minimum requirements, DirectX may not have been
successfully installed on your system. If the DirectX driver is not
installed for any of your system's components, Win 95 attempts to
emulate a driver, causing a loss of performance. Consult section 3.0,
DirectX.

[5.3] My sound is distorted during movies or gameplay.

It could be that your sound card drivers for DirectX (DirectSound) are
unsupported or out of date. Consult your sound card manufacturer for the
latest DirectX drivers.

[5.4] My video is distorted or off center.

It could be that your video card drivers for DirectX (DirectDraw) are
unsupported or out of date. Consult your video card manufacturer for the
latest DirectX drivers.

[5.5] The game gives me an error and quits back to Windows.

The first step is determining the error :

[5.5.1] Full screen mode init failed. Refer to the README.TXT about
        conflicts with desktop settings.

Your video drivers currently do not support running the game. Switching
your desktop color depth to at least 256 colors should allow you to run
the game. To change your desktop color depth :

1 Right-click My Computer.
2 Double-click Control Panel.
3 Double-click Display.
4 Click Settings.
5 Click on the Color Palette drop-box and select 256 colors or
    higher.
6 Click OK.

[5.5.2] CVMManager::xx

Windows 95 uses virtual memory to increase the total amount of memory
beyond the amount of physical memory. This virtual memory is located on
your hard disk. The more free hard drive space you have, the more
Windows will have free to allocate as virtual memory. If you are
receiving this error message :

1 you may be running other applications while running Wing Commander
IV. Try shutting down these other applications and run the game
    again.

2 you are running out of hard disk space and should delete any
unnecessary files and directories to give Windows more disk space
    for virtual memory.

3 you are not allowing Windows '95 to manage your virtual memory and
have the maximum amount of virtual memory set too low.

[5.5.3] Other Errors

It may be a good idea to make sure your hard drive is in good order. To
do this, you may want to run Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter

To access Scandisk, click
    Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Scandisk.

To access Disk Defragmenter, click
    Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter.

Follow the instructions on screen.

After this has been completed, try re-installing the game. If this does
not help, consult the WC4HELP.TXT file which contains in-depth
troubleshooting information. If this does not help, feel free to contact
Origin Technical Support.

[10.0] End-User License Agreement for Microsoft Software

END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR MICROSOFT SOFTWARE

IMPORTANT READ CAREFULLY: This Microsoft End-User License Agreement
(EULA) is a legal agreement between you (either an individual or a single entity) and Microsoft Corporation for the Microsoft software which may include online or electronic documentation ("Software") provided in the Electronic Arts software game you have acquired. By installing, copying, or otherwise using the Software you agree to be bound by the terms of this EULA. If you do not agree to the terms of this Agreement, you are not authorized to use the Software.

The Software is protected by copyright laws and international copyright treaties, as well as other intellectual property laws and treaties. The Software is licensed, not sold.

1. GRANT OF LICENSE. This EULA grants you the following rights: Microsoft grants to you the right to use copies of the Software only as part of the Electronic Arts software game that such Software was included, and only in conjunction with validly licensed copies of Microsoft operating system products [e.g., Windows(tm) 95; Windows NT(tm)].

2. RESTRICTIONS. --You must maintain all copyright notices on all copies of the Software.--You may not distribute copies of the Software to third parties. --You may not reverse engineer,
decompile, or disassemble the Software, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation. --You may not rent, lease, or lend
the Software. --You may permanently transfer all of your rights under this EULA only in conjunction with a permanent transfer of your copy of the Electronic Arts software game in which the Software was included.

3. TERMINATION. Your rights under this EULA terminate upon the termination of your Microsoft operating system EULA, or without prejudice to any other rights, Microsoft may terminate this EULA if you fail to comply with the terms and conditions of this EULA. In such event, you must destroy all copies of the Software.

4. COPYRIGHT. All title and copyrights in and to the Software and any copies thereof are owned by Microsoft or its suppliers.

5. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS. The Software is provided with RESTRICTED RIGHTS. Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c)(1)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at DFARS 252.227-7013 or subparagraphs (c)(1) and (2) of the Commercial
Computer Software Restricted Rights at 48 CFR 52.227-19, as applicable. Manufacturer is Microsoft Corporation/One Microsoft Way/Redmond, WA 98052-6399.

6. EXPORT RESTRICTIONS. You agree that you will not export or re-export the Software to any country, person, entity or end user subject to U.S.A. export restrictions. Restricted countries
currently include, but are not necessarily limited to Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Syria, and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro, U.N. Protected Areas and areas of
Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina under the control of Bosnian Serb forces). You warrant and represent that neither the U.S.A. Bureau of Export Administration nor any other federal agency has suspended, revoked or denied your export privileges.

7. NO WARRANTY. Any use of the Software is at your own risk. The Software is provided for use only with Microsoft operating system products and the Electronic Arts software game in which you received it. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Microsoft and
its suppliers disclaim all warranties and conditions, either express or implied, including, but not limited to, implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and noninfringement.

8. NO LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall Microsoft or its suppliers be liable for any special, incidental, indirect, or consequential damages whatsoever (including, without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business interruption, loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss) arising out of the use of or inability to use the Software, even if Microsoft has been advised of the possibility of such damages. Because some states and jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of liability for consequential or incidental damages, the above limitation may not apply to you.

9. MISCELLANEOUS This EULA is governed by the laws of the State of Washington, U.S.A.
