Hi, Welcome to The JSW Emulator V1.01a (various fixes).

After doing next to nothing for a year I have finally released V1.0
The Zip is much smaller now :)

Oh I have fixed many bugs, and altered a few things. Thanks for the
hundreds of emails. The sound should work on everything now.

7. THE MUCH REQUESTED CHEAT.
-----------------------------------------------------

1. Control.

The Joystick may be used 'Fire' Starts the game, the rest you know.

If you would rather use the keys for that 'Retro' Feel they are:

Top Row - left & right

'Space' & all of bottom row - Jump

'q' and 'a' move willy up and down on the map screen.

'a' to 'g' pause the game.

'F4' Loads JSW-PC Rom, which can be generated by the editor.

'H' to 'Enter' turns Music On/Off.

'F1' Switches between The new graphics and the old (original) graphics,
if you are playing the Re-Drawn version of JSW.

'F3' Cycles through the Speeds of the game.

'Alt' or 'Right Arrow Key'
brings down all the other options which let you change
      resolution, music, themes and Speed.
Use the arrow keys to move left and right through the menus,
and up and down to change them. Note that they change straight
away, and they they multi-task along with the game.

'C' lets you enter 'Madness' mode in which all the floors sink as
you walk on them. Try it, see how many objects you can get!

'Esc' Quits your current game and drops you back to the title screen.

'F10' Quits the game back to Windows/DOS/Lunix(?).

---------------------------------------------------

2. Idea of the game.

Select a ROM to play from the map screen, try to collect as many
objects as you can in that game until you run out of lives.
When you return to the map the best score you achieved on that ROM
will be displayed next to it, also the more items you collect the
bigger the Banyan tree will grow. Eventually if you manage to make the
Banyan tree grow a door, and complete both 'Manic Miner' (15 levels) and
'Manic Miner 7' (Including killing the boss) you can enter the tree...

Don't over look Manic Miner 7 as being a normal MM game, as you play
through its many caverns, you will find that it soon becomes very
different, with secret caves, many extra lives up for grabs, freaky
one off rooms (such as the nightmare of 'Friday the 13th') 2 screen
rooms, moving platforms and more...

Giant Keys:
Sometimes after you finnish playing a Manic Miner game a giant key
may be added to the map. You will need these to complete the game,
how to get them is a secret, but you should be able to work it out...

Idea of the original game:

Collect all the objects from around the house, then go back to Maria
your house keeper with 74 of them.
(thats the woman in 'The Master Bedroom')
You have 7 lives to complete your task with, there are over 60 rooms to
find and explore. This theme is altered in the other JSW games, but
the basic idea remains the same.

---------------------------------------------------

3. Some info about the game and the people behind it.

This game is a conversion of a ZX Spectrum game made in 1984 by the
now god like Matthew Smith who basically wrote the book on platform
games.
The ZX Spectrum was a British Computer popular in the 1980's,
Check out www.void.demon.nl/spectrum.html for more info on what was
one of the best ever home computers.

The graphics are re-colored in real time during the game using a simple
and very memory & time saving routine.

This game has been made by the hard work of:

Programming, the plot & Manic Miner 7
                 Craig Rothwell (craig@cdworld.co.uk)

Graphics on JSW-PC remake, the new Willys(!), and Manic Miner 7
                                      Helen Foote (Helen@cdworld.co.uk)

Music & Sound - Matt Simmonds (4mat, yes the 4mat from the Amiga Scene)

Andy Noble - The original Manic Miner graphics some of which are used
             in Manic Miner 7.

Thanks for playing it, we hope you all feel like its the early 1980's
again.

The Main Code is C++.
It took 7 months on and off to program, and was written in Notepad,
then when that ran out of page memory I used MS-Write. It was compiled
via a BAT file with DJGPP the 32-Bit Freeware Compiler.
Code Updated 1997,1998 and 1999.

So I hope it will compile under Lunix and Win95 with no problems.

I used DJP version 1.07 by ML1050 to compress the .EXE

I used the Allegro lib for the graphics storage and display &
SEAL for the music and sound FX.

I wrote my own clipping and buffering routines for the gfx , coloring
and file formats. I also did the pixel perfect collision detection.

I will release the code for this game at www.cdworld.co.uk/craig soon.
Be warned in advance though, its not structured at all.

The game uses the original JetSet Willy tape file's (ROM's) which can
be seen in the main DIR of the game. They each end in .SNA or .TAP.
All the game info is read from these so don't remove them, PLEASE
DO NOT email me saying 'I can't get past room XXX in XXX game. I DID
NOT MAKE ANY OF THE GAMES INCLUDED apart from Manic Miner 7.

You could replace the included roms with your own and they should run
just fine (Although there are no guarantees, Matt Smith was on all
kinds of drugs when he wrote the JSW engine let me tell you, and it was
NOT easy to emulate).

Helen used Paint Shop Pro 4.1 for the graphics.

I'm (Craig) a teenage student, but I might not be anymore by the time
you read this (I'm not now). I am totally available for any programming
work, or just about anything computer related. I will work for food*.

*and I may also want some kind of payment... at some point.

Helen graduates soon (June 98) in Biology, any job offers would be
great. Shes good at anything computer related too.

------------------------------------------------------
4. What to do if you like the game

If you like the game all I ask is you consider buying one of my
Emulator CD's which are only 5 pound each.

There are Speccy, C64 and CPC Cd's each have MASSIVE archives of games
ready to run. There are now 2 spectrum discs as the WOS archive has
passed the 700meg mark. If you want both discs it will be 8 pounds in
the UK and 10 pounds outside.

My CD page is at www.cdworld.co.uk/mmcd
My Emulator page is at www.cdworld.co.uk/emu

If you can't be bothered to go there and just want a CD pop 5 pounds
(8 pound outside UK) (cheque, postal order or cash) into a letter
and send it to me at:

Craig Rothwell
422 Denton Road
Denton Burn
Newcastle Upon Tyne
NE15 7HB
United Kingdom (if your outside the UK!)

I'll post the CD's straight to you.
Please try to include 2 stamps or 50p extra for the postage as this will
speed up the sending. Cheques made out to Craig Rothwell or Helen Foote.
(Helen is quicker)

By buying a CD you are helping the development of more cool and free
conversions of classic games. Like, oh I don't know stunt car racer...

5. Acknoledgements and thanks

The author of the Amiga version of 'Head Over Heels' which was what
caused this game to be made, See I was actually going to do 'Head over
Heels' as I love it. But it would have probably been a bit hard I
thought, so I thought 'I know I will do a easy game first like... oh
whats simple? Jet Set Willy!' 4 months later, I realise it was probably
harder to write, well not so much hard as frustrating, you see I had
to make sure that all the jump movements etc were perfect all the rooms
worked ok etc etc. Also Helen had to draw graphics for 65 Rooms!.

Shawn Hargreaves for the brilliant time saving 'Allegro' lib for DJGPP.

DJ Delorie for the Fantrabulious 32-Bit DJGPP Freeware Compiler!

The jetset willy ultimate fan page!

Andy Noble for his brilliant Manic Miner conversion.

Matt for the great music.

Andy for the MM graphics.

The remakes page!

All of you for your emails and bug hunting.

----------------------------------------------------
6. Whats next then?

For updates on this and new games we have done since this see the
website.

Anyway Hope you have fun,

Craig.

PS Please send Me/Helen/Matt an email to say what bits you like and
don't like etc. etc.

There is a cheat in this new version, I will be putting a map and a
guide to playing through the manic miner games online as soon as some
brilliant player completes the game and wins the prizes.
