-------------CommLink - By Steven Schulze---------------

This is a simple Windows 95 /NT program that allows you
to use an internal modem on one computer as an external
modem on a second computer.

For instance, if you have a desktop computer with an
internal modem, and you also have a notebook computer
without a modem, it's possible to use the internal modem
in the desktop computer with the notebook.

I wrote this program after I got my notebook, but didn't
want to pay $200 for a PCMCIA modem for it. With this
program, I can log onto the internet and/or play games
like DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake etc from my notebook
from either DOS or W95. I can't notice any penalty in
speed when using this program vs a direct modem
connection. The program usues multithreading to run
seamlessly & smoothly in the background.

There are other programs that allows you to share a modem
on one computer with other computers, but this program has
some advantages over most other, like:

1) No network between the two computers is required, only
    a null-modem cable.

2) Only the computer with the modem needs to run a copy of
CommLink. The other computer sees the modem as an
"external" modem. This means that the second computer
can be running from DOS, or any other OS that can work
    with an external modem.

3) The program is very simple to set up. Only basic COM
    port settings are required.

4) The program doesn't write anything to the registry,
doesn't put any dll's into other directories and
therefore are very easy to remove from your computer.

This is a shareware version of CommLink. The program will
self-terminate in 20 minutes. This is meant to be annoying
untill you get the full version by sending me $10. I will
send you the full version of CommLink. Twenty minutes
shoulkd be enough to let you see if it works for you, and
to decide if $10 is worth it. You can re-run CommLink as
many times as you like, but it will terminate every time
after 20 mins.

If you find this program usefull and would like the non-
terminating version, please send a $10 check to:

Setting up CommLink:
--------------------

1) Copy CommLink.exe and CommLink.txt into a directory
    of your choice.
2) You can create a shortcut to CommLink.exe by right-
clicking on it and selecting "Create Shortcut".
Then drag the shortcut to wherever you want it, like
the desktop or the start menu.
3) Run CommLink.exe. It will use default settings for
all the options. You can change them, and the next
time you run CommLink, those settings will be used
    again.

Some Notes...
-------------

1) The computer that has the modem must be able to
handle the 3 or so COM ports that is required.
One for the mouse (if you use a serial mouse),
one for the internal modem and one for the external
null-modem cable. Some computers can't use
    combinations of COM1 and COM3, or COM2 and COM4.
If you can't get it to work, using a buss mouse
or an IO card that can handle higher IRQ settings
    might solve the problem.

2) The cable you use must be a "null-modem" cable.
You can get them from places like Radio Shack etc.
Sometimes you can only get a serial-serial cable
and a null-modem adapter. This will also work.

3) CommLink uses COM port IRQ and address settings
from your Control Panel. If you have resource
conflicts, this is where you need to correct it.

4) There are some combinations of port settings that
are invalid. You can only use 1.5 stop bits with
a byte size of 5 bits, but 5 bits are almost never
used, as far as I know. This is a hardware
    limitation

5) I have not checked all the possible combinations
of settings. There might be some bugs.

This is the first version of CommLink. If you find any
bugs, please let me know and I'll fix them. By getting
support in the form of money from other people that find
this program usefull, I can spend more time working on the
next versions of it. I'm now also working on a propper
help-file. If you do send me any money, you'll be the
first to know about new features/bug fixes.
