Future Domain Corporation Royal Albert House Sheet Street, Windsor Berkshire SL4 1BE England Phone: +44 753 831 262 FAX: +44 753 629 184 8.0 CORRECTIONS TO THE PC DOS 6.3 DOCUMENTATION 8.1 AddStor Compression Programs SuperStor and SuperStor PRO If you have compressed your disks using prior versions of Addstor's SuperStor or SuperStor PRO, we suggest you backup this data, uninstall, and then install the Data Compression of PC DOS 6.3 (SuperStore/DS) instead. 8.2 The MOUSE Command The following switches are not valid as documented in the PC DOS 6.3 Command Reference: -- /E, /F, /Q, and /K -- /Mn (where n is replaced by a number) is only valid as /M In addition, disregard the note about placing the mouse into upper memory. 9.0 WHAT IS NEW FOR PC DOS 6.3 (ENHANCEMENTS OVER PC DOS 6.1) o USABILITY - FILE OVER-WRITE WARNING will prompt you before you over-write files that have identical file names, when using the COPY, MOVE or XCOPY commands. This will prevent you accidentally erasing or overwriting important files. If you are sure you want to COPY, MOVE or XCOPY to a particular directory, you can use the switch "/y" to turn this overwrite protection off. - NO-SWAP DISKCOPY will copy the entire contents of one diskette to another by using the system's hard disk as a temporary storage area. The laborious task of swapping source and target diskettes multiple times will no longer be necessary. If you want to use only memory, not hard disk, for DISKCOPY, you can still do this with the "/m" switch. - INTERACTIVE BOOT will let you bypass or step-through your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. By using CTRL+F8 at system initialisation, you get the Interactive Boot, with which you can bypass loading DBLSPACE.BIN, and can be prompted to confirm each statement in your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. This lets you start with a "clean" system without having to rename your boot-up files. The step-through option makes it easier to identify where you might be having a problem when booting your system. - INTERACTIVE BATCH FILE PROCESSING brings the Step-Through feature to any .BAT file. This is done with a new switch (/y) in the COMMAND command. - The E EDITOR has been enhanced to create a separate temporary file of all search instances found in a document. This temporary file, called .ALL, lists all occurrences of the search term and their line numbers. By moving within it and pressing CTRL+Q, you can move to the right line in the original file. This is a major help when looking for a search term which occurs several times in a long file. - LONG NUMBERS are now easier to read, since commas, or your country's normal thousands separators (eg, a blank space in French), now appear in long numbers when using DIR, MEM, CHKDSK, and FORMAT commands. This option is controlled from the command line by entering either "SET NO_SEP= " to turn the separator on, or "SET NO_SEP=OFF" to turn it off. The default is to have the Number Separator on. o EXTRA DEVICE SUPPORT - MSCDEX 2.23 provides access to CD-ROM drives. - SMARTDRV now provides memory caching for CD-ROM drives. - BACKUP has additional tape drive support, making a great backup sol- ution even better. - KEYBOARD SUPPORT has been added for Macedonia and Serbia (Cyrillic). o BETTER TOOLS - ANTIVIRUS has been enhanced to detect and eliminate over 2000 viruses - an increase of 500 over the number found by PC DOS 6.1. - COMPRESSION has been fully integrated into PC DOS 6.3. (In the USA, it was sold as a separate add-on; in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, it has been integrated since the release of PC DOS 6.1 in November 1993.) o FASTER AND BETTER - SMARTDRV (which provides a disk cache in Extended or Expanded Memory, to speed up disk operations) has been enhanced to improve hard-disk performance. - DEFRAG (which reorganises the files on the PC hard disk, to remove gaps and speed up file access and opening) now uses extended memory to defragment even large hard disks safely and efficiently. - FORMAT will ignore any bad clusters found on a disk. This will prevent you being able to put data on bad clusters. - RAMBOOST (which optimises your PC's memory usage by increasing your computer's conventional memory and reduces the complexity of using computer memory management software) now searches the CONFIG.SYS file to determine if DOS 6 Multi-Config has been used. If it finds it, it can optimise and track each environment separately. This gives you dynamically optimised memory utilisation in multi-config environments. RAMBoost now also has built-in DOS-UMB support, which when activated advises DOS that it is running in DOS-UMB mode. This means that direct XMS UMB memory requests and LOADHIGH commands will be honoured from the command line. - QCONFIG, our diagnostic tool, has been upgraded to recognise a host of new OEM adapters. It also has an enhanced reporting scheme. 10.0 HOW TO ORDER NEW PC DOS 6.3 PUBLICATIONS The PC DOS 6.1 publications have been updated for PC DOS 6.3 to tell you more about the enhancements over PC DOS 6.1 listed above.
