printer driver that supplements the on-line Help. These topics are
covered:

     *    Printing in Grayscale

     *    Printable Areas/Margin Settings

     *    System Configuration

     *    Advanced Settings

PRINTING IN GRAYSCALE
=======================
The default print mode setting and the default dithering method provide
best quality black text printing.

To print in grayscale, select the Black/Grayscale print mode (HP DeskJet
310 only) and one of the following dithering methods: Pattern, Scatter,
or Cluster.

To print black text after printing grayscale, select the Standard
dithering method.

PRINTABLE AREA/MARGIN SETTINGS
================================
The printable area on a page using the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver
differs from the printable area on a page using DOS applications.

For HP DeskJet 310 printer only: In Windows, the top and bottom margins
of your document will differ if you are using a print mode which allows
color.

The top margin and bottom margins of a document printed in the
"Color/Composite Black" print mode will print 1/6 in. shifted up from
the top and bottom margins of a document printed with the
"Black/Grayscale" print mode.

     If it is important that the Color and Black documents are
     vertically aligned, use the Advanced Settings program (see ADVANCED
     SETTINGS section below) and select "Align color and black pages".
     Note that in this mode, the bottom margin will be 2/3 inch, and any
     existing documents with footnotes in this region may not print.

Margins may vary when you print the same documents using different
printers. You may need to adjust margin settings, pagination, or
reformat your document. Use these tips to minimize the need to reformat
your documents for printing with other printers:

     * Use fonts that are common to the printers that you are using.

     * Increase your top and bottom margins. For example, if the
         minimum setting is 1/2 in. for one printer and 1 in. for
         another printer, set your margins for 1 in. for all documents.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
======================
An 80286 processor or greater is required to use the HP DeskJet 310
printer driver.

Disk Requirements

The HP DeskJet 310 printer driver requires approximately 3 MB of free
disk space for installation of the driver and the printer fonts that
come with it (Courier, CG Times, Univers, and Symbol).

ADVANCED SETTINGS
===================
In some instances, a solution may require modifying one of the printer
driver's advanced settings. To do this,

      * Insert the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver disk into a: (or b:)

      * From the Windows program manager, run the program
        a:\readme\drvset.exe

      * Select the settings that need to be changed.

      * Click on "Done" to save the changes.

      * Restart Windows after making the modifications.

ENHANCED ERROR DETECTION
==========================
The HP DeskJet 310 printer driver has the ability to detect printer
error states such as out of paper, wrong print cartridge installed, or a
low battery level. This "enhanced error detection" mode is only
available when the printer is connected directly to a computer (not over
a network) with a standard parallel (Centronics) cable.

When the printer is printing across a network, to a file, or through
another third party software print product that receives input from a
print file (e.g., LPT1.PRN or LPT1.OS2), the printer driver detects
this, and enhanced error detection is not available.

If you have unresolvable hardware or software printing conflicts, turn
off the enhanced error detection to try to resolve the problem.
Select the entry "Disable enhanced error detetion" in the Advanced
Settings program (refer to the ADVANCED SETTINGS section in this
document).

If the printer's status dialog remains on the screen for an inordinate
amount of time (with no action taken) and no error messages are
displayed, check the following:

1. Make sure the printer setup dialog box caption matches the printer
    model that you are using. If not, reinstall the printer driver, and
    select the correct printer model.

2. Make sure the interface cable is connected properly and securely.
    There may be a data communication problem. If the problem continues,
    your interface cable may have a problem, try a new cable.

3. Make sure that enhanced error detection is disabled.

Using Print Manager

With enhanced error detection enabled, Windows Print Manager is ignored
by the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver. With Print Manager enabled or
disabled, you may continue to work in other applications while the
application from which you are currently printing finishes the print
job. Also, you may use Print Manager for network or other local printing
with all printer drivers other than the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver.

With enhanced error detection disabled, you may use Print Manager with
the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver. This is not recommended, since it
usually takes longer to print a document with Print Manager than without
it. If you choose to use Print Manager with the HP DeskJet 310 printer
driver, you must first turn off the printer driver's enhanced error
detection as described earlier in the section and then select the check
box next to "Use Print Manager" in the Control Panel.

BATTERY GAUGE
===============
When using the DeskJet Portable or DeskJet 310 printers in battery mode,
the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver will detect this and and display a
battery gauge in the Printing Status box (while printing). If the
battery gauge does not display, it could be due to one of the following:

       * There is no battery in the printer.

       * The a/c adaptor is plugged in (battery being charged).

       * The battery state is unknown. This occurs whenever the battery
         is changed. The printer will only know the battery state after
         it has completely charged or discharged the battery.

       * The printer is not directly connected to the computer. Refer to
         the ENHANCED ERROR DETECTION section in this document.

NETWORK SUPPORT
=================
Hewlett-Packard does not support network configurations where the
DeskJet Portable or DeskJet 310 printers are used as shared devices.

However, installing the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver to a Windows
network is supported when the printer is not used as a shared device.
Two types of network installations are possible: central installation
and local installation.

Central installation is the default mode that the HP Setup install
program selects. The installation program copies driver files to the
Windows system directory. If the Windows system directory is on a
network drive that is write protected, an error message recommending
local installation appears on your screen.

Local installation is selected by typing HPSETUP /L. If you choose local
installation, the install program copies all driver files to the Windows
directory on the local system.

PRINTING ON ENVELOPES (HP DeskJet 310 only)
=======================
Envelope media is not supported.

However, if you are able to obtain envelopes made of thin paper, and can
succesfully load and eject an envelope in manual feed mode, you may
configure the printer driver to display envelope media sizes for proper
formatting.

Using the Advanced Settings program (see the ADVANCED SETTINGS section
ealier in this document), select:

       "Display envelope media sizes"

You should also select "Landscape" orientation when printing envelopes.
Note that envelopes should be inserted manually, starting with the
right-hand edge (where the stamp is).

Caution: Printing on envelopes that are thicker than the maximum media
thickness specified in the printer manuals may damage the printer.

APPLICATION NOTES
===================
At the time the HP DeskJet 310 printer driver was released, the
following software application limitations existed:

     For many applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel), the print job is
     cancelled by means other than the application's cancel dialog, the
     application may display an error message. Ignore this message and
     continue.

     For many applications, printing crosshatching is not supported in
     Pattern, Cluster or Scatter dithering methods. Select Standard or
     Standard Black mode to print crosshatching.

     For the HP DeskJet 310 printer with envelope printing enabled (see
     above section titled PRINTING ON ENVELOPES), the print may appear
     in the wrong orientation when envelope printing is selected with
     the envelope icon in the application's tool bar. Use the Printer
     Setup dialog box to select the correct envelope media size.

     ALDUS PAGEMAKER v4.0: You cannot cancel printing from Printing
     Status box. PageMaker controls all mouse and keyboard input during
     printing. Cancel printing from the PageMaker printing status box.

     ALDUS PAGEMAKER v4.0: When printing some documents, the contents of
     a page will occasionally shrink and print in the upper left corner
     of the page.

     COREL DRAW v2.0: Color vector fills may print incorrectly.

     COREL DRAW v2.0: "Fit to Page" is not supported.

     HARVARD GRAPHICS: Overall slow performance with this application is
     especially noticeable on 286 machines.

     LOTUS AMI PRO v3.0: For HP DeskJet 310 printer (with envelopes
     enabled - see PRINTING ON ENVELOPES section in this document). To
     print envelopes correctly you must use the Options button in the
     Print Envelopes dialog box. If the Options button is not in the in
     the Print Envelope dialog box, contact the Lotus Customer Service
     Department for a modified print envelopes file.

     LOTUS FREELANCE: Displays and prints only in 4 colors: black,
     white, red, and cyan. Turn off "display output colors" in the
     application user setup. Also turn off the "Adjust Color Library
     for Color Printing" setting.

     After printing from Freelance, the Program Manager becomes
     the active window instead of returning to Freelance. To solve this
     problem, disable the "Printing Status" dialog box. Use the Advanced
     Settings program (refer to the ADVANCED SETTINGS section in this
     document) and check the entry:

           "Disable printing status dialog box"

     LOTUS FREELANCE: Does not support Pattern, Scatter, or Cluster
     dithering methods. Use Standard or Standard Black.

     MICROGRAFX CHARISMA v2.O: When page orientation or page size is
     changed, the scalable printer fonts may be replaced by bitmapped
     screen fonts. To avoid this, print the document using the
     orientation and page size in which it was created.

     MICROGRAFX CHARISMA v2.0: Some color bitmapped graphics may not
     print correctly.

     MICROGRAFX DESIGNER v3.01, 3.02, 3.1: When a page orientation or
     page size is changed, the scalable printer fonts may be replaced by
     bitmapped screen fonts. To avoid this, print the document using the
     orientation and page size in which it was created.

     MICROSOFT EXCEL v3.0: When you paste graphics from other
     applications, Excel may print the pasted graphics with the screen
     background color of the source.

     correctly. Settings are not retained. To reach a printer setup
     that will work:

	  Select: File, Page Setup, Printer Setup, Setup

     MICROSOFT POWERPOINT v2.0: Color pattern fills do not print
     correctly for any of the dithering methods.

     MICROSOFT PUBLISHER v1.0: Changes in the print settings are not
     retained in this application. Use the Windows Control Panel to
     change settings.

     MICROSOFT PUBLISHER v1.0A with WINDOWS 3.1: If you have trouble
     printing large images, try adding the following line to the
     MSPUB.INI file in your Windows directory in the [PRINTING] section:

		   bandinmemory=1

     MICROSOFT WORD v1.0 and v1.1: When you print large point sizes, the
     double underline will appear as a solid line.

     MICROSOFT WORD v2.0: Newly installed printer fonts are not
     recoginzed until you choose Printer Setup from the File menu and
     click OK.

           Select: Format, Page Setup, Paper Source, First Page,
           Envelope, Other Pages, Envelope.

           Select: Tools, Options, Print, and turn off Reverse Print
           Order.

     If changing the settings does not solve the problem, try adding the
     following line to the [MICROSOFT WORD 2.0] section of your WIN.INI
     file:

                HP DeskJet 310 printer=0

     MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC v1.0: Program listings may contain text
     lines that are split or printed twice.

     QUATTRO PRO v1.0: When printing charts in the Color/Composite Black
     print mode, select the Standard dithering method.

     VENTURA PUBLISHER: This application does not print TIFF images
     correctly. Try choosing Pattern, Cluster, or Scatter dithering
     method.

     VENTURA PUBLISHER: This application cannot print multiple copies,
     because it does not correctly query the printer driver for multiple
     copy capability.

     WINDOWS FILE MANAGER v3.0: When Print File is chosen, the last line
     on a page may not be printed. Try printing from within an
     application (e.g., Write).

     WORDPERFECT v5.1, v5.2: You may have trouble printing some color
     images. Try the solution:

          Select File, Preferences, Print, and turn off "Fast Graphics
          Printing" by unchecking the check box.

     WORDPERFECT v5.1, v5.2: The Paper Source setting in the driver
     setup dialog (Sheet Feeder or Manual Feed) is ignored. Use the
     following path to set it:

          Type with the correct "Location".

     The following printing problems occur with these monitor/display
     drivers:

          ATI/HERCULES DISPLAY DRIVERS: Color patterns may not print
          properly using the Standard dithering method, but will print
          properly with either the Pattern or Scatter dithering method.

          MATROX IMPRESSION DISPLAY DRIVER: Some black graphics do not
          print with the Standard (or Standard Black) dithering method,
          but do print with either the Pattern or the Scatter dithering
          method.

          RASTER OPS MONITOR (1024 X 768) DRIVER: Has problems which
          cause random specks in Black/ Grayscale mode. The Intensity
          slider patterns are reversed but the Intensity slider text is
          correct.

          VIDEO SEVEN SCREEN DRIVER: The underline width is too wide on
          90 degree rotated text. Use Standard dithering mode in
          Windows.

          VIDEO SEVEN SCREEN DRIVER: The first letter on the left page
          margin may get truncated on the hard copy.
