Wooden Ships & Iron Men
Scenario Pack Notes

The Wooden Ships & Iron Men Scenario Packs include new
scenarios for the game. Copy these files into your scenario
directory, which is usually C:\WSIM\SCENARIO. The new scenarios
start at number 100, so there shouldn't be any danger of them
copying over any scenarios you've created.

You should then be able to play the scenarios normally.

The scenario packs includes scenarios from several different
time periods, including the War of 1812, the early
American Revolution, the Napoleonic wars, the battles of
Richard Bollitho, and several pirate scenarios.

If you haven't already, please download the Wooden Ships &
Iron Men patch 1.02, which fixes some bugs that have
appeared in the last few months, especially for systems with
8 megs of RAM.

Enjoy!

FAQ for Wooden Ships and Iron Men
FAQ version 1.02

1. What is Wooden Ships & Iron Men?
WS&IM is Avalon Hills' game of turn-based strategic naval combat
during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. You can command
American, French, British or Spanish ships in the pre-built
scenarios, or captain an American ship during the War of 1812.
You can also create your own scenarios, and PBEM against another
	human opponent.

2. What are the system requirements?
	486/66 or Higher
	8MB RAM
	CDROM
	100% Microsoft compatible mouse
	VESA-compliant SVGA video card
	15MB free Harddisk space
	MS-DOS 5.0 or higher

3. I am trying to start it from Windows Explorer, but it just exits back
to the Explorer window.
The usual cause is video-related. Right-click on the shortcut for
WS&IM, choose Properties, Program. In the CMD Line box, click on
the end of the line(the one that reads "c:\wsim\wsim.bat"), add
a physical space(hit the space bar), then add a "/v". That should
	take care of the problem.
Also make sure that your configuration has a Dos Mouse driver loaded.

4. Getting Error "Could not Initialize Mouse".
There is no Dos Mouse driver loaded. Check the documentation on your
Mouse or system on how to load the mouse driver.

5. I have a Number Nine video card, and the graphics are all screwed up.
Contact Number Nine for a VESA driver for your particular model
card. Their web site is http://www.nine.com.

6. I have an Nec machine with an Alliance ProMotion video card, and it will
not set up the graphics correctly.
Contact NEC to see if a "performance upgrade" package is available for
your particular model NEC. You may also need to contact Alliance for
an updated set of drivers for the card.[insert link to www.alsc.com]

7. Trying to run the game, I get an error that it cannot find the CD.
The CD must be in to run the game. It will not recognize the cd if
on a networked Cd; the CD must be in the machine on which you are
	running the game.

8. Is there a way to give multiple ships the same orders, such as a fleet
command?
No. Orders must be given to each ship individually. The goal was to
provide plenty of opportunity for the player to give orders, and this
type of option reduces the player's interaction with the game.

9. Are the effects of certain captains modeled in the game?
One of the critical hits that can take place is the captain being
killed. This decrease crew skill which in turn affects gunnery
	and melee.

10. Why only an American Campaign? Why not include French, British,
Spanish campaigns?
We picked American, because during the War of 1812 the entire US Navy
consisted of the ships we listed in the game. This allows players
to captain any US ship of the time. Also during this period,
American naval operations basically consisted of commerce raiding,
which lends itself to the format of the campaign game.

11. Why don't the ships I defeat sink?
We didn't show the ships sinking, since historically, ships would
strike their colors(surrender) long before they got to that point.

12. I see damage to the rigging, but not to the hull.
We show the rigging damage, including dismasting of ships. None of
the attempts at showing hull damage looked right, so we use the status
bars on the ship status screen.

13. Where is the land?
WS&IM concentrates on the larger ships of the eras depicted, and
land(coastlines and shoals) were more common involving gunboat
sized vessels, which are not within the scope of the game.

14. Is it possible to capture a ship and put a prize crew aboard?
Although in the boardgame you can capture a ship and put a crew
on board then use it against the enemy, historically, this didn't
really happen until after the battle. Basically, a prize crew
was put aboard the ship to sail it back to a friendly port where
it would be repaired, provisioned, and manned. This would be
extraneous in the scope of the game, which concentrates on the
	particular battles and scenarios.

15. Why are there so many single-ship scenarios, as opposed to multi-ship
scenarios?
The proportion of single-ship to multi-ship scenarios reflects the
historical preponderance of single ship battles.

16. Where are the fires and explosions?
There were intentionally not included. In the boardgame, ships
rarely caught fire or exploded. Ship explosions are included
in the game as one of the critical hits.

17. What's with the Melee? Just a banner, why not animations?
At the scale at which the game is played, it is hard to do melee.
We tried to animate crew fighting, but even at the most zoomed in
	level, they looked like ants.

18. Is there a demo?
Yes. The demo allows you to play one of the scenarios to give
you a feel for the game system. You can download the demo on
	our web site: http://www.avalonhill.com.

19. Where can I get more scenarios for WSIM?
The Wooden Ships & Iron Men scenario pack is now available for
free at our web site http://www.avalonhill.com. It includes over
30 new scenarios, including Revolutionary, War of 1812,
Napoleonic battles, battles of Richard Bollitho, and several
	pirate scenarios.

20. I'm having problems with the background editor in the scenario editor.
The easiest way to get around this is to press space bar before
you begin, use the left arrow to go back a space, and then
begin typing. This seems to prevent any of your text from
	getting lost.

21. What is the latest version of the game?
You can download version 1.02 on our web site. It fixes crash
problems for systems with 8 megs of RAM, especially in the
	scenario editor.
