Introduction
------------

Welcome to MemMiser!

For the end user, MemMiser greatly simplifies the issue of DOS memory
management. Anyone, regardless of his or her level of PC experience, can
USE MemMiser once it has been properly INSTALLED (and optionally CUSTOMIZED).
The installation and customization processes, however, can be demanding.
Please read carefully the introductory text displayed by the installation
program. Make sure you understand it before beginning the installation.

Always use INSTALL.EXE (Install) to install MemMiser. Unlike many programs,
MemMiser cannot simply be installed by using the DOS COPY command to copy
files from the installation diskette. Install analyzes your PC and
configures MemMiser, based on the amount of memory available, the version
of DOS installed, and any existing system configuration files (CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT).

Quick Installation Instructions
-------------------------------

To begin the installation, follow these steps:

 1) Insert the MemMiser installation diskette into your PC's A: or B: drive.
 2) Change to that drive.
 3) Type INSTALL at the DOS prompt and press [Enter].

Install will prompt you to enter (or just confirm) certain information.
Context-sensitive help is provided throughout the installation. Just press
F1 whenever you are unsure about what to do next.

Install will create several example memory configurations for use with
MemMiser. These "generic" configurations work, but eventually you will
probably want to customize or delete them.

Memory Manager Incompatibilities
--------------------------------

When third-party memory managers (like QEMM) and similar DOS add-on's are
running, Install and MemMiser may mistakenly think a DOS shell is active.

If Install erroneously displays the message "Install cannot be run from
within a DOS shell," follow these steps:

 1) Temporarily comment out any CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT lines that
    load third-party memory managers.
 2) Reboot your PC.
 3) Re-run Install.

When Install is finished, you can reactivate the memory manager(s).

If MemMiser refuses to reboot your PC, erroneously claiming that a DOS
shell is active, follow these steps:

 1) At the "Memory Configurations" window, press F3 to bring up the Setup
    window.
 2) Set the "Check for DOS shell" option to "N".
 3) Press F10 to save the new setting.

MemMiser will now be able to reboot your PC. This makes it more compatible
with third-party programs, but keep in mind that it will no longer be able
to detect "real" DOS shells.

Finally, MemMiser will not allow editing of the master environment while
some third-party programs are running.
